How to Split Rent and Expenses With Roommates
Rent is only the beginning. Utilities, internet, groceries, cleaning supplies and small repairs add up quickly. A clear system agreed in advance protects both your budget and your relationship with your roommates.
Start with the rent
An equal split works when the bedrooms and amenities are similar. If one room is larger, has a balcony, private bathroom or parking spot, agree on a fixed premium for that benefit instead of reopening the same debate every month.
Write down each roommate’s amount and the payment date. A short documented agreement prevents confusion later.
- Split equally when the rooms are comparable
- Adjust by room size or private amenities
- Split by income only when everyone freely agrees
Separate fixed, variable and personal costs
Internet and local fees are usually fixed shared costs. Power and water change monthly but still belong to the people living there during that period. Personal groceries or subscriptions should stay outside the shared total.
When only two roommates use a streaming service or buy furniture together, assign that expense only to them. The third roommate should not subsidize something they did not choose.
Settle on one date every month
Choose one monthly date to collect every expense. Whoever paid adds the amount and participants, then sends one final summary. One clean transfer is easier to follow than ten small payment requests throughout the month.
- Keep a receipt for unusual purchases
- Log costs when they happen instead of relying on memory
- Agree in advance on what counts as shared
Example: three roommates, one month
- Rent
- $2,100
- Power and water
- $180
- Internet
- $60
- Cleaning supplies
- $70
Total: $2,410. If every item is shared equally, each roommate covers $803.33, adjusted for the bills each person already paid.
The rule that matters most
You do not need a mathematically perfect system. You need one everyone understands. Transparency and consistency matter more than a tiny difference in the final number.
Put every apartment expense in one place
Enter rent, bills and purchases manually, choose who shares each cost, and send roommates one link with their totals.
